Before the seventh national curriculum in elementary moral education there were behavioristic approach and formalistic approach. But the seventh national curriculum and its 2007 reformed national curriculum placed emphasis on ‘integrated character education’. This is different from behavioristic approach and formalistic approach. Integrated character education provides us with an answer to the problems that behavioristic moral education and formalistic moral education have. These are ways to achieve the goal of integrated character education. Firstly there should be a lot of virtues to teach in the curriculum. Secondly teachers make students choose which virtue will be fit for the situation that teachers give as a moral problem. Thirdly teachers encourage students to write essays about good deeds they did and keep a diary about virtues, and then teachers evaluate them. Finally teachers should conduct themselves as a role model. The practical plan of integrated virtue education will help students internalize virtues and make a habit of doing good deeds after their intellectual understanding and cognitive processing of virtues.

본 연구의 목적은, 초등 도덕과 교육과정 속에서 덕교육의 의미를 살펴보고, 내용과 형식을 통합한덕교육이 무엇이며 도덕교육에서 통합적 덕교육이 가능한가를 알아봄으로써 그 가능성을 토대로 통합으로서의 덕교육을 초등 도덕과 교육과정에서 실천할 수 있는 방안을 탐색하는 데 중점을 두었다. 제1차에서부터 최근 개정 도덕과 교육과정에 이르기까지 도덕교육의 지도 내용은 덕목으로 구성되었다. 또한 도덕과 교육과정 개정의 방향은 ‘행동 중심’에서 ‘인지 중심’으로, 그리고 제7차 도덕과 교육과정과 2007개정교육과정 도덕과에서는 ‘통합적 인격교육 내지 덕교육 중심’으로 바뀌었다. 통합으로서의 덕교육은 과거의 덕목주의 교육과는 다르다. 내용과 형식을 통합한 덕교육은 ‘행동 중심’의 덕교육이 갖는 문제점과 ‘인지 중심’이 갖는 문제점을 해결할 가능성을 제시해 준다. 통합적 덕교육의 실천 방안으로는 첫째, 교육 내용으로서의 덕목을 포괄적으로 선정하고 둘째, 교수-학습 방법으로 주어진 문제 상황에서 필요한 덕을 선택하는 방법 등을 제안하며 셋째, 선행록, 덕을 주제로 일기쓰기등을 통한 평가 방법 넷째, 덕의 모범이 되기 위한 교사의 역할 등이 있다. 통합적 덕교육의 실천방안은 덕에 대한 충분한 지적 이해와 판단 및 선택의 과정을 거쳐 덕을 내면화 하고 습관화 하는 데에도움을 줄 것이다
