The usage of structural equation modeling based on the formative construct has increased much in information systems research. Recently scholars raised concerns with formative measurement in its conceptualization and estimation reliability. Among the issues in debate is interpretational confounding. It is argued that the estimation of the formative model is unstable due to its reliance on other dependent variables in determining measure weights and path coefficients. There are, however, countering views that such arguments are grounded on flawed research methods (e.g., measurement model misspecification, simulated correlation matrices). This study examines the effect of interpretational confounding for the second-order formative models.
