Recently, microalgae producing high biomass have drawn lots of attention from researchers since algal biomass can be used for bioenergy production. Previous studies suggested that three green algae strains, Chlorella schroteri, Dunaliella salina and Dunaliella sp., could be used
for high biomass production. In this study, a central composite design program was used to investigate effects of several medium components on the biomass production of the three microalgae strains. The biomass production rates of the algae were determined by dry cell weight and its relatedness with specific growth rate was also studied. The optimum pH
of Chlorella schroteri, Dunaliella salina and Dunaliella sp.were 9, 9 and 8, respectively. The three algal species were grown cultured a batch mode with different concentrations of nitrogen and phosphate. The experiments demonstrated that the specific growth rate is proportional to
the dry cell weight. In addition, response surface contour plot and numerical analysis determined that maximum biomass production from Chlorella schroteri, Dunaliella salina and Dunaliella sp. were 0.97 g/L, 2.27 g/L and 1.01 g/L, respectively. Currently, optimization of nutrient concentrations and culture conditions for the large scale biomass production are under the process.
