Production of biofuels and chemicals from marine resources has recently attracted considerable attention. Recently, micro-algae as potential resources for biodiesel production have been widely investigated. Nevertheless, the technologies for production of chemicals from marine resources
have received very little attention. Levulinic acid, currently derived from petroleum, are versatile biomass-derived platform compounds and can be applied to produce a broad range of chemicals. This study focused on optimized production of levulinic acid from marine biomass using acid hydrolysis and statistical approach. As a result, the production of levulinic acid was optimal when reaction temperature was high, reaction time was long, and catalyst concentration was high.
