Biological pretreatment of barley straw by Lactobacillus plantarum for bioethanol production

Barley straw is a potential lignocellulosic biomass for production of bioethanol because of high contents of cellulose and hemicelluloses. L. plantarum was employed as starter culture in barley straw storage to suppress the outgrowth of other microorganism. Biological pretreatment
method was proposed and tested for degradation of barley straw. In addition, scanning electronic microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy, and X-ray diffractometry revealed significant microstructural changes and a reduction of the crystallinity index in the pretreated barley
straw.
