Microalgae are major primary producers of organic matters in aquatic environments through their photosynthetic activities. Benthic diatom Navicula incerta is the major component of phytoplankton and also relatively easy to cultivate, used as live food source in aquaculture. The
growth characteristics and the protein content of N. incerta were estimated under combinations of temperature, salinity, and light; and also its biological composition and antioxidant activities were determined. The maximum cell density of 87 × 105 cells · ml-1, was reached at 20 °C,
250 μmol m-2·s-1, 33 ‰ salinity, pH 8.3, 12:12 L:D and F/2 medium on 2 weeks of the culture period. The value of protein, lipid, moisture, carbohydrate and ash in mass culture was 50.38 ± 0.03%, 8.76 ± 0.04%, 9.81 ± 0.09%, 10.84 ± 0.03% and 19.67 ± 0.05% respectively. The antioxidant enzymatic hydrolysates from N. incerta efficiently quenched different sources of free radicals: DPPH radical (pepsin IC50 = 196.0 μg/ml), hydroxyl radical (α-chymotrypsin IC50 = 102.0 μg/ml) and superoxide radical (neutrase IC50 = 169.0 μg/ml).
