In this study, we investigated the alcohol metabolizing activities, antioxidant activities, nitrite scavenging abilities, and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) and elastase inhibitory effects of Makgeoly induced by addition of ethanol extracts from Capsosiphon fulvescens (MCF). To determine the influence of MCF, the generating activities of reduced-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide(NADH) by alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) were measured. Facilitating rates of ADH activity by MCF was remarkably increased in a dose-dependent manner. Nitrite scavenging ability of MCF showed the most remarkable effect at pH 1.2 and 1 mg/ml. Inhibitory activity against angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) of MCF was increased in a dose-dependent manner and was about 73.2% at 10 ㎎/㎖. MCF was tested for their inhibitory effect on elastase activity and determined to be 46.5% at 10 ㎎/㎖. Antioxidant activities were measured by using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl- hydrazyl (DPPA) free radical avenging
activity and the SOD (superoxide dismutase)-like activity. DPPH radical scavenging activity and SOD-like activity of MCF were remarkably increased in a dosedependent manner and was about 27.3% and 39.2% at 10 mg/ml, respectively. These results indicated that MCF may have valuable biological activities owing to their antioxidant activities, ADH activity, nitrite scavenging ability, and ACE and elastase inhibitory activities.
