Deodorization of Fucoidan by Spray Drying Process

Deodorization conditions were optimized for the reduction of typical sea-weed smell of fucoidan by spray drying. Deodorization for sea-weed smell of fucoidan was examined using various solvents such as ethanol and acetone. Ethanol was selected as the best solvent for the deodorization for sea-weed smell of fucoidan. The conditions of the spray drying such as raw material to solvent ratio, incubation time, inlet temperature, flow rate and atomizer speed were optimized. The sea-weed smell in fucoidan was reduced upto 60% when crude fucoidan was treated spray drying. The correlation between sulfate contents and anticoagulant activity of
fucoidan obtained by spray drying treatment was investigated. Spray dried fucoidan showed higher sulfate content and anticoagulant activity than crude fucoidan.
