Antioxidant activities of the arctic seaweed Devaleraea ramentacea were investigated in cellular system. The seaweeds were extracted with a mixture of acetone-dichloromethane (1:1), followed by extraction of the residue for an additional 2 days with methanol. And then the
combined extracts were fractionated into n-hexane, 85% aq. methanol, n-buthanol, and water-soluble fractions, successively. The antioxidant activities of the combined crude extracts and solvent fractions were evaluated using three different activity tests - measurement on generation
of reactive oxygen species (ROS), lipid peroxidation and ONOOgenerated from SIN-1 (3-morpholinsydnonimine) in cellular system. Among these tested fractions, n-hexane fraction not only significantly decreased levels of intracellular ROS but also inhibit membrane lipid peroxidation in a dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that potential natural antioxidants related to oxidative stress can be isolated from the arctic seaweed D. ramentacea.
