This study was performed to evaluate the effect of nano-encapsulation of Ephedra sinica Stapf aqueous extracts on immune activation activities in vivo and in vitro. The extract was encapsulated by lecithin and the size of nanoparticles was less than 300nm. For in vivo experiments, lecithin only (LO), lecithin nano-encapsulation of E. sinica (LE), E. sinica only
(EO) and distilled water (DW) were orally administrated into mice for three weeks. The IgG levels of the mice were increased as 51.2 ng/mL in feeding the nano-encapsulated E. sinica, compared to 27.8 ng/mL in feeding DW. The body weights were also increased up to 10% in feeding both LO and LE groups. For in vitro experiments, the growth of human B cell (Raji) and T cell (Jurkat) was increased up to about 40% for the case of adding the nano-encapsulated E. sinica group, compared to the control group. All of the nanoparticles were penetrated into B cells
within 3 hours by real time confocal microscope observation. We considered that the nano-encapsulation process with lecithin could improve the immune activities of E. sinica.
