In this study, to investigate the antioxidative enzyme activity and tyrosinase inhibition activity in the thirteen kind of natural plant pigments was examined. Each plant pigment showed effectiveness on antioxidative enzyme activity and inhibition of tyrosinase. Antioxidative enzyme activity was evaluated in terms of superoxide dismutase(SOD), catalase(CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase(APX) activity. The bitter melon pigment had the highest SOD enzyme activity of 40.4%. The activity of CAT and APX were higher in the mulberry leave pigment compared with other plant pigments as 957.9 U/㎎ protein and 2119.5 U/㎎ protein. Subsequently, inhibition activity of tyrosinase catalyzed melanin synthesis was also the strongest in the mulberry leave pigment as 34.5%. These findings suggest that the pigment derived from natural plants had the potent biological activities, and that might be potentially inhibitor against melanogenesis and it could be further developed as skin whitening and anti-aging cosmetics.
