Vibrio harveyi is a pathogenic bacteria associated with vibriosis that is a common disease in marine aquaculture systems. The aim of this study is to control the water environment for culturing larvae of marine animals like the swimming crab and shrimp, using microorganisms. Classified as generally recognized as safe (GRAS) strain of Korean fermented food, 127 strains were isolated from soybean paste and Korean hot-pepper paste. Also 18 strains were isolated from the gut of Portunus trituberculatus. Growth inhibition assay showed that CFS (Cell-free supernatants) from the 24-h culture of these strains and competition by each microbe were able to inhibit the growth of Vibrio harveyi. At present, experiments are being performed using 145 strains from Korean fermented food and the gut of Portunus trituberculatus. We anticipate that it is possible that some bacterial strains will be effective for use a biocontrol agents in marine aquaculture systems.
