The purpose of this study is to find the effects of social skill training program on the self-recognition and the self-assertion of children with mental retardation as a single participant case study. The specific subjects of this study are as follows.
First, how were the effects of social skill training program on the achievement of self-recognition of children with mental retardation ?
Second, how were the effects of social skill training program on the achievement of self-assertion of children with mental retardation ?
For the purpose of this study, three children with mental retardation who are in the third and fourth grades at N elementary school in Daegu Metropolitan City were selected,
and this study was carried out from October 14 to November 27, 2008 and it was conducted twice a week for 40 minutes - in total 14 times.
Social skill training program used in this study was reconstructed by the conductor of this study and the teachers in charge of the general classes, referring to the self-determination program of Bang Myong-Ye(2006) and adapting the level to the one of children with mental retardation.
Also, I regularly observed and recorded the children's verbal and non-verbal behavior to recognize the general change of the children's action with mental retardation.
The conclusion drawn from the results of this study is as follows : First, social skill training program is effective to improve self-recognition of children with mental retardation. According to the result, the children acquired 6 more points in average comparing the pre-test with the after-test. It also showed the effects on maintaining the self-recognition in the harvest-test 4 weeks after applying social skill training program.
Second, social skill training program is effective to improve self-assertion of children with mental retardation. According to the result, the children acquired 8.3 more points in average comparing the pre-test with the after- test. It also showed effects on maintaining the self-assertion in the harvest-test 4 weeks after applying social skill training program.
The suggestion drawn from the results of this study is as follows.
It is hoped that we have to continuously improve self-recognition and self-assertion of children with mental retardation by applying appropriate social skill training program in school or in special class for children with mental retardation as many preceding studies of children with mental retardation have presented.

본 연구에서는 적응행동에 많은 어려움을 나타내고 있는 정신지체 아동들에게 사회적 기술 향상 프로그램을 적용하였을 때 자기인식 및 자기주장 향상에 미치는 효과는 어떠한지 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 본 연구의 대상으로 대구광역시 N초등학교에 재학하고 있는 정신지체 아동 3명을 선정하였다. 본 연구의 중재 프로그램은 사회적 기술 향상 프로그램이며, 주 2회, 1회 40분씩 방과후 시간을 활용하여 특수학급 교실에서 총 14회기 동안 진행되었다. 또한 연구의 설계는 실험전, 후에 자기인식 검사 및 자기주장 검사를 동일하게 실시한 후 점수 변화를 살펴보았으며, 중재 종결 4주 후에 추수검사를 실시하여 효과의 지속여부를 검증하였다. 본 연구의 결과 3명의 대상아동 모두 자기인식과 자기주장에 있어 점수의 차이는 있으나 긍정적인 변화를 보인 것으로 나타났다.
