The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the conflict between a Korean mother-in-low and a Vietnamese daughter- in-low in a multicultural family. I described the daily living experience of the conflict in detail following main deteriorating causes of the conflict: the difficulty of communication, cultural difference, and the difference of mutual expectation. From analyzing the case, the conflict based on the difference of mutual expectation and on the difference of value and character are the major sources of the conflict. These conflict patterns are very similar to Korean cases, but the conflict based on affectional competition was not important. The major findings of this case study would be that emotional acts, shouting, and avoidance were very often used in daily interactions from the conflicts.

본 사례연구는 다문화가족의 고부간에 나타나는 일상적인 갈등을 묘사함과 동시에 그 작동 요인들을 찾아내는 것이었다. 60대 시어머니를 집중적으로 면담․관찰하여 외국인 며느리와 갈등의 핵심 요인이 의사소통 어려움, 문화차이, 상호기대의 불일치임을 파악했다. 이를 한국인 고부갈등과 비교할 때 다문화가족의 고부갈등에서도 역할구조 및 생활구조형 갈등이 핵심이었음을 파악할 수 있었다. 그러나 한국고부간 갈등에서 중요하게 나타나는 애정경쟁형 갈등이 별로 없었으며, 권력구조형 갈등은 한국고부관계처럼 겉이 아니라 배후에서 작동함을 파악했으며, 또 그 갈등은 한국고부간보다 더 심하고 일상적이었다. 그 이유는 의사소통 어려움, 문화차이, 상호기대 불일치가 일상적 관계로 작동하여 이를 해소할 기제가 없어 고부관계를 더욱 악화시키기 때문이었다. 이러한 악화요인 때문에 이들 고부관계에서 감정적 행동이나 회피가 일상적으로 나타나고 있었다. 외국인 며느리에 대한 심층 연구 사례를 축적시켜 이러한 갈등을 해소시킬 정책이나 프로그램이 매우 필요한 시점이다.
