A series of cognitive tests (memory, attention, language, executive function) were administered to 67 young and old participants aged from 20s to 70s. Each task was programmed using a computer software and performed on the computer. For the memory and language tests, participants responded verbally to the instructions and for the attention and executive function tasks, they responded by pressing big-sized buttons designed for people with disabilities. The study demonstrated overall age-related cognitive deficits in older adults but showed that some cognitive functions, such as attention and language, seemed more resilient to aging than others. The results also showed that memory impairments in older adults seemed due to a lack of encoding rather than retrieval; education level turned out to be an important factor in language but not to other cognitive functions and generally attention declined as people got older and their attention deficits were even more prominent while doing more complex attention tasks. Statistically controlling for attention, however, did not directly affect the test results of other cognitive functions.

기억, 주의집중력, 언어, 실행기능 등의 일련의 검사를 20대부터 70대 사이의 67명의 보통 사람들에게 실시했다. 각 검사는 컴퓨터 프로그램으로 제작해서 실시되었다. 기억과 언어 검사들의 반응은 언어로 답변하는 방식으로 얻었고, 주의집중력, 실행기능 검사들의 반응은 장애인들을 위하여 특별히 제작된 대형 스위치를 이용해 얻었다. 검사결과, 모든 인지 기능들은 대부분 연령에 따른 저하를 보였으나, 그 중에서도 주의집중력이나 언어 등의 인지기능들은 다른 기능들보다는 연령의 영향을 크게 받지 않았다. 또한 노인들의 기억력 저하는 기억한 단어를 재생할 때 인출 문제가 아니라 학습 할 때의 약호화의 결여에 기인함을 밝혔다. 교육수준은 언어능력에는 중요한 요소로 드러났으나 다른 인지기능에는 큰 영향을 미치지 않았다. 일반적으로 주의집중력은 연령증가에 따라 감소하고 특히 복잡한 작업을 할 때 그 정도가 심해졌으나, 다른 맥락에서는 그렇지 않았다. 본 연구의 다른 결과들과 제한점도 함께 논의하였다.
