Manju, which represented in Korean modern novels, is 'site événementiel', the outside of a colony and extension of Joseon, and has a meaning a space having possibility that can demonstrates the desire of immigrating Koreans to settle and of colonial Koreans to overcome modernism. The subject of the novels is to be revived by the separated identity, which is an existence having no sovereignty and aiming at sovereignty and which is subjugated colonial people and aiming at conquest, and Manju is represented a space of such revival where new subjectivity is established.

한국 근대소설에 재현된 만주는 식민지의 외부이면서 조선의 연장인 ‘사건적 장소(site événementiel)’이며, 이주 조선인의 정주에의 욕망과 식민지조선인의 근대 초극에의 열망을 시연해볼 수 있는 가능성의 공간으로서의 의미를 지닌다. 소설의 주체는 비주권적 존재이면서 주권을 지향하는, 비초극적 식민지인이면서 초극을 지향하는 분열된 정체성으로 인해 갱생되고자하며 만주는 그러한 갱생의 공간, 새로운 주체성 정립의 공간으로 표상된다.
