The purpose of this study is to understand how Korean newspapers frame news stories about water resources and how the meaning of water is structured in those stories. For this purpose, we analyzed 374 news stories from 5 Korean newspapers; The Chosun Ilbo, The JoongAng Ilbo, the Dong-A Daily News, The Hankyoreh and The Kyunghyang Shinmun. The results showed that Korean newspapers structured the reality of water resources through responsibility attribution frame, conflict opposition frame, background frame, value frame, and emotion frame. Also, even though they used different frames and expressed different criticisms depending on the political stance of each newspaper, news stories didn't cover important issues such as the pure value of water, the relationship between mankind and water, the relationship between life and water, and the future and water. In conclusion, news stories in Korean newspapers didn't strengthen readers' awareness about water itself. They rather made readers attribute the problems of water resources to government, business and natural disaster.

본 연구는 한국 신문이 ‘물’ 자원에 대하여 어떻게 프레이밍하고 있으며 이를 통해 ‘물’의 의미가 어떻게 구성되고 있는지를 살펴보기 위한 것이다. 이를 위하여 1970년부터 2008년까지의 <조선일보>, <동아일보>, <중앙일보>, <한겨레신문>, <경향신문> 기사 중 ‘물’, ‘자원’, ‘수자원’ 등의 키워드를 통하여 검색된 374건 기사를 분석하였다. 연구결과 한국의 신문들은 책임귀인 프레임, 갈등 프레임, 배경 프레임, 도덕성 프레임, 감성형 프레임 등을 통하여 ‘물’ 자원 현실을 구성하고 있었다. 또 신문의 정치적 입장에 따라 ‘물’ 자원에 대한 프레이밍 구조와 비판적 입장이 차별적으로 나타나고 있지만 순수하게 ‘물’의 소중함, 인간과 물의 관계, 생명과 물의 관계, 미래의 물 등과 관련된 보도는 거의 나타나지 않았다. 결과적으로 한국 신문의 ‘물’ 자원 보도는 ‘물’ 자체에 대한 인식을 강화시키지 못했으며 수용자들이 자신들의 문제가 아닌 정책당국, 문제를 일으킨 기업, 자연재해 탓으로 ‘물’ 자원의 문제를 인식하도록 하고 있었다.
