This exploratory study tried to examine the extent of information overload individuals might experience in the information oriented society and the impact of information overload on their emotional and physical health. According to the research result, there is a significant relationship between socioeconomic factor such as income, age, and education, and the degree of individual's information overload. This result addresses that the person having more frequent exposure to information could have more chance to carry greater information overload. Although information overload did not have a significant relationship with emotional problem, individual difficulties caused by information overload had a significant explanatory power to understand individual's emotional condition. The study also revealed that information overload might cause personal physical problem such as insomnia, digestive problem, etc. stimulated by stress. The present research indicates that the information society could lead to unnecessary individual burden on emotional and physical health. Therefore, it seems to suggest that the adoption of new media be more cautious.

미디어 확산이 인간의 정보처리 능력을 넘어설 정도의 정보과잉을 초래하고 있다는 주장을 고려하여, 본 연구는 탐색적 차원에서 이러한 과잉 현상이 개인에 미치는 효과들을 경험적(empirical)으로 살펴보았다. 먼저, 사람들의 정보과잉 인식이 사회인구학적 요인들에 따라 어떻게 차이가 있는지 분석하였다. 분석한 결과 나이가 적을수록, 학력이 높을수록 정보과잉에 대한 인식은 높아짐을 알 수 있었다. 또한 정보과잉이 개인적 정서에 미치는 영향을 살펴본 결과, 정보과잉의 직접적인 영향력은 나타나지 않았다. 그러나 정보과잉에 따른 정보부담감 변인의 효과를 확인할 수 있었다. 즉, 정보과잉으로 정보부담감을 많이 경험할수록 불안･초조감이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로, 정보과잉은 스트레스로 인해 나타날 수 있는 불면증, 동통, 소화기장애, 심장혈관장애와 유의미한 관계가 있음을 보여주었다. 이러한 결과들은 커뮤니케이션 기술 발전으로 인한 정보과잉 현상이 사람들에게 부정적인 영향을 미칠 수 있다는 점을 시사하며, 향후 정보화에 대한 면밀한 점검과 평가를 요구하고 있다.
