The main purpose of this article is to examine Korean college students' perceptions on the unification in Korean peninsula and their impact on social distance. In order to achieve this goal this study applies Boulding's theory which advocates the utility of the concept of national image as a unit of analysis to analyze the macro level of international relations. This study is also based on previous research associated with Koreans' dual image of North Korea. The data used for this study is the survey conducted in June 2009 with structured questionnaire, including students' on the unification and their dual images of North Korea as an enemy or compatriot. The survey was carried out among college students taking politics-related courses. Among the total of 1,250 respondents 1,072 were extracted as samples to be analyzed. The author argues that Koreans' various perceptions on North Korea might influence their understandings and attitudes to share the sense of commonality with North Koreans. It is argued that both political and economic integration associated with the unification which will be hope realized in a short-time period is a very important issue, but the more important task is to achieve social integration by increasing our consciousness of kind as a Korean.

이 연구는 우리사회에 현존하는 북한에 대한 서로 다른 인식은 국민들이 북한을 받아들이는 데 있어서 영향을 미칠 수 있는 가장 근본적인 원인이 된다는 생각으로부터 출발한다. 거시적인 국제관계의 분석개념으로서 국가이미지의 유용성을 주창한 볼딩((K.E. Boulding)의 이론과 북한에 대한 한국인의 이중적 이미지를 구체화시킨 선행연구를 바탕으로 우리의 청년층이 가지고 있는 북한에 대한 이미지를 통해 통일에 대한 일반적 인식의 정도를 살펴보았다. 바람직한 남북관계가 이루어지고 정립되려면 사회구성원이 어느 정도 이에 부합되는 이미지를 가지고 있어야 함은 당연하며, 북한에 대하여 가지고 있는 이미지의 정도는 우리사회의 미래 발전적 측면과도 깊이 연관되는 문제이다. 분석의 결과, 우리국민들 간에 존재하는 적, 동포/형제라는 상반된 대북이미지는 한국사회의 지역감정에 더해 또 하나의 균열축(fault line)으로 작용하고 있으며, 향후 한국사회의 정치적, 사회적 방향에도 영향을 미칠 수 있는 요인임을 확인하였다. 본 연구의 결과로 남한 사람들이 갖는 북한에 대한 이중적 이미지가 적어도 남북관계 및 남북한 간의 심리적 통합에 장애요인이 될 수 있음을 제안한다. 북한에 대한 이중적인 이미지는 곧 편견과 같은 단순한 편파 된 지각이 아닌 한 동포와 형제로서의 북한과 냉전과 이데올로기의 대립 속에서 체제를 달리하는 적으로서의 북한을 바라보는 우리의 현실의 의식으로서, 본 연구는 이러한 상반되는 이미지가 우리 안에 공존하는 정도를 검증한 연구결과라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 향후 현실화될 통일과 관련하여 정치․경제적인 측면도 중요하지만, 하나의 국민으로서의 진정한 통일을 위해서는 국민적인식과 더불어 사회적인 통합이 우선적인 과제이다.
