Plagiarism is the appropriation another person’s ideas, processes, results, or words without giving appropriate credit. Self-plagiarism occurs when an author reuses portions of their previous writings in subsequent research papers. Plagiarism and self-plagiarism is not good for scientific progress and our academic community. But there is no clear criteria on what is considered plagiarism and self-plagiarism among research misconducts. Even experts disagree on counts as plagiarism and misconduct. Although there is some uncertainty about how the definition and types of plagiarism itself is applied, we must suggest definition and types of plagiarism which is widespread agreement in the scientific community. And we must know that self-plagiarism is much more prevalent than any other forms of scientific misconduct. So formal guidelines for avoiding self-plagiarism can supplement exiting policies and criteria on plagiarism. Plagiarism is quickly becoming part of our educational culture. Many students are turning to the internet for quick ‘cut and paste’ and do not know that they are plagiarizing. And those who do know are often unaware of the seriousness of the offense and its possible consequences. So we need education for preventing plagiarism. We also need online education and ethical writing.

표절은 다른 사람의 작업을 자신의 것으로 훔치는 것이다. 자기표절은 한 저자가 후속 연구에서 이전의 저작물의 부분들을 재활용할 때 일어난다. 표절과 자기표절은 과학적 발전에 해가 되며 우리의 학문적 공동체에 좋지 못한 것이다. 하지만 우리의 학계나 대학에서는 연구부정 행위 중에서 표절로 간주될 수 있는 것에 대해 명확한 기준이 없다. 심지어 명확한 경계에 있어서는 전문가와 대학들도 표절로 간주할 수 있는 것에 대해 불일치하고 있다. 비록 표절의 기준 그 자체가 적용됨에 있어서 어떤 불확실성이 존재하고 있지만, 우리는 학문 공동체에서 광범위하게 합의할 수 있는 있는 표절의 기준을 제시해야 한다. 그리고 우리는 자기표절이 연구부정의 다른 어떤 형식보다 보다 만연되어 있음을 알아야 한다. 그러므로 자기표절을 피하기 위한 공식적인 규정이 표절에 대한 정책이나 기준에 대해 추가되어져야만 한다. 한편 표절 혹은 자기표절은 빨리 우리의 교육적 문화의 한부분이 되어가고 있다. 많은 학생들이 인터넷으로 ‘자르고 붙이고’ 있으면서도 그것이 표절임을 모르고 있다. 알고 있는 이들도 종종 그러한 범죄의 심각성과 초래할 결과들을 제대로 알지 못하고 있다. 그래서 우리는 표절 예방을 위한 교육을 필요로 하며 또한 온라인을 통한 교육이나 윤리적 글쓰기 등을 필요로 한다. 결국 이 연구는 자기표절을 포함하는 표절에 대한 국내외의 규정 등을 비교 분석하고 교육현장에서의 문제점 진단 등을 통해 표절 예방 향상을 위한 논의에 기본 자료를 제공하고 표절예방교육을 보다 내실화할 수 있는 방안을 제공하고자 한다.
