Shapes and patterns in textiles from different cultures are a reflection of the aesthetics, lifestyles, emotions, and psychological values of a certain era or an ethnic group. Thus, Korean traditional patterns and shapes may well represent Korean culture and differentiates its own characteristics from others. This study analyzes the significance of the Korean traditional flower-patterned wall called ‘kkot-dam' and some examples of its re-appearance in fashion design in the present day. The study leads to rediscovery of the practical and artistic advantages of the conventional flowery pattern as well as suggests the possibility of use in modern fashion design. In the end, six garment samples were created using kkot-dam. The results from this study are as follows. First, the lines and shape that form kkot-dam are simple but graceful which is representative of the Korean aesthetics: unity with nature. Second, there is a great possibility of creating new designs by reorganizing the shapes of kkot-dam. Third, hand-painting techniques with leather are great in expressing graceful kkot-dam's low saturation color and is a suitable method for applying applique technique to express various shapes of kkot-dam.

문양은 한 민족의 미의식, 생활의 여건과 감정, 정신적 가치 등을 반영하여 시대와 민족에 따라 특징적 양상을 보이므로 디자인에 한국 전통 문양의 활용은 우리나라의 고유성을 나타내어 국제화 사회에서 독창적이고 차별화된 모습을 보여준다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 전통미의 한 모티브로 꽃담에 나타난 문양 중 꽃문양의 다양한 형태와 조형성을 연구하고 현대 패션에 응용된 꽃문양의 사례를 살펴봄으로써 꽃담에 나타난 꽃문양을 이용한 새로운 표현기법과 디자인을 개발하고 전통 문양의 현대적 활용 가능성을 제시하고자한다. 이를 바탕으로 꽃담에 나타난 문양을 재구성하여 실물 작품 6벌을 제작하였다. 이를 통해 얻은 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 꽃담에 나타난 꽃문양은 형(形)과 선(線)이 단아하고 소박하며, 자연과의 합일을 추구하는 우리 미의식을 그대로 반영한다. 둘째, 담에 나타난 꽃문양 모티브 재구성을 통해 문양 디자인의 무한한 창출 가능성을 확인할 수 있었으며, 셋째, 가죽을 응용한 핸드페인팅은 채도가 낮고 고풍스런 꽃담의 색을 표현하는데 용이하며, 또한 올 풀림이 없어 아플리케 기법으로 꽃담 문양의 다양한 특징적 형태와 조형성을 응용하는데 적합하다.
