This writing deals with the life of Heo Hoe (1758~1829) who mainly did positive activities in the second half of Chosun Dynasty and the world of his literary works. Although Yeom-ho had typical military background, he was instructed by Seong-dam Song Hwan-Kee who had followed Yul-gok academic tradition. Even being in the field of warriors, he was good at writing poets, and gave lectures on his learning and battle tactics in Gyeonyeon(經筵), which made him get compliments from the king as an outstanding soldier equipped with academic knowledge. In a word, he was an unusual soldier with both academic and military virtue. Moreover, in his daily life, he was known as an exemplary son and also put a high value on practical life. It is presumed that Yeom-ho left a large volume of Chinese poetry, but just about 40 works have been come down so far. Details about those works are as follows: First, the half of his poetry works, about 20 poets include responses or greetings, adoption of other rhymes, and revisions of others’ poets while he was on excursions. Second, among his works relatively many of them are virtuous pursuing realization of public morals and the teaching of the sages. Additionally, he showed his enthusiasm in his poets to explore the nature of virtue contained in and through the nature. Third, Yeom-ho’s works get attention by their color reflecting his attitude which he sought secluded and unworldly life. Fourth, throughout his works, we can outstandingly acknowledge the grand conception, the great spirit, and the patriotism of him who lived as a soldier for his whole life.

본고는 조선 후기에 활동했던 염호(濂湖) 허회(許澮,1758~1829)에 대한 생애와 시세계를 고찰한 것이다. 염호는 지금까지 거의 알려지지 않았다가 최근에 필자가 그의 문집을 번역하여 세상에 모습을 드러냈다. {염호집}에 대한 발굴과 번역, 그리고 논의는 우리 선인들이 남겨놓은 수많은 문화 자산들의 하나를 보존하고 후대에 알릴 수 있다는 점에서 의의가 있다고 본다. 염호는 전형적인 무반계열이었지만, 그는 율곡의 학통을 이어받은 성담 송환기에게 나아가 학문과 도학을 전수받았다. 그는 무반이었지만 시를 잘 지었고, 경연에 나아가서 경학과 용병의 방법들을 강론하여 임금으로부터 학문을 갖춘 무관이라는 칭찬을 받기도 하였다. 한 마디로 염호는 문무를 겸비한 드문 무장이었고, 일상생활에서 효행에 힘쓰고 실사적 삶을 중시하였다. 염호는 다수의 한시를 창작했던 것으로 짐작되지만 현재 전하는 한시는 40여수에 지나지 않는다. 이를 살펴보면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 시작품의 절반 정도인 20여 수가 교유 중에 화답하거나 차운, 또는 수증한 작품들이다. 둘째, 그의 시에는 도의의 구현이나 성현의 가르침을 추구하는 도학적인 작품들이 상대적으로 많다. 게다가 그는 자연의 모습을 통해 그것에 내재된 도학적 본질을 탐색하려는 태도를 취한다. 셋째, 염호의 시는 한적한 삶을 지향하고 탈속적인 취향의 시작품이 주목된다. 마침내 염호는 40여년에 걸친 관직 생활을 마치고 귀향해서는 세속과 일정한 거리를 두고 산수에 노닐었고 경전 탐구와 예의 실천에 힘썼다. 넷째, 염호의 시에는 일생을 무인으로 살았던 그 자신의 웅지나 호연지기, 또는 충절 의식이 돋보인다.
