The late Chosun Period is the time when the women’s hair styles were a lot changed and the social interests in it were very higher than anytime. This study has classified the hair styles as the social symbolism, the mental & psychological symbolism and the aesthetic & physiognomic symbolism. The symbolism of the hair style for the social class and marriage was the general form for symbolism at the Chosun period and the symbolism appearing at hair style of the Chosun period is comprehensively analyzed by the detailed classificaitons.
The social symbolism is classified as the marriage meaning, the class meaning and the wealth meaning, whereas the mental symbolism is classified as the filial piety meaning, the obedience meaning, the dignity meaning, the meaning of forming a relationship and the passing meaning. The aesthetic symbolism of hair style is classified as the beauty and the physiognomic symbolism and finally as the incantation symbolism in order to study the symnbolism appearing at hair style of the Chosun period. The extended interpretation with the limited remains and the documentary materials is more and less unreasonable. The study on the past is not perfect, but we are able to plan the furture considering the past as a life model. Therefore, we hope this study will help understand the Korean beauty culture and also will be used as a basic material for the further research in order to create the value of the beauty culture.
