The modern times is the time of images and images technologically reproduced by public media, such as films, TV, advertising, and magazines, provide more convincing reproduction of
reality than reality and comprise new values and meanings.
With the development of technology and science, video makeup is developing as special makeup, computer graphics, and Animatronics. Special makeup, computer graphics, and Animatronics take a big part of video production technology.
Special makeup, which is the theme of this study, creates visual images and styles of characters
in video narratives by artificially altering or reinforcing faces and bodies of actors/actresses. By
doing so, it visualizes personalities and roles of characters and produces socio－cultural meaning of visual media.
The purpose of this study is to understand special makeup as a means of visual expression that
takes a large portion of video media and to broaden the creative perspectives of special makeup
artists who create performance arts in between actors and their characters.
Studies on special makeup generally discuss theoretical knowledge (basic technical aspects or
instructions on product use) and rarely discuss how special makeup is actually used onsite. Thus, this study will record preliminary fabrication process over a four－month period, actual methods of special makeup used in onsite fabrication, and effective trouble－shooting responses, to share practical information on special makeup.
