The purpose of this study is to examine the level of Sunday school superintendents' role perception and role performance. Another purpose is to find their demographic information and to examine the differences and the relationship between age, education, career, their volunteer backgrounds to their role perceptions and their role performances. This study was based on 68 Sunday school superintendents who work in the Sunday schools of the Korea Evangelical Holiness Church. The instrument employed was the Sunday school superintendents’ role perception and role performance with demographic questions and volunteer history questions. The data was collected through questionnaire from October 25 to November 22, 2009. The data analysis included mean, S.D., frequencies and percentage, paired-t-test, ANOVA, correlation. The findings of this study are as follows: 1. The majority of the demographic information was male, deacons, 41-50 years old, and college graduates. 2. The level of role perception was 3.88 and the role performance level was 3.49 out of 5 on the Likert scale. 3. There were no significant differences between the demographic information, the role perception, and the role performance. 4. There were no significant correlations between a calling, a career as a Sunday school teacher, a Sunday school superintendent and a role perception or a role performance. Based on these results there are several conclusions as follows: 1. Demographic information like gender, age, or education does not affect the qualifications of becoming a Sunday school superintendent. 2. Careers like teachers and Sunday school superintendents do not support their role performance. Therefore they need to have opportunities for training their duties and job. Consequently, seminars or education training programs are needed.

조직 내에서 자신의 역할을 제대로 인식하고 있지 못하고 이에 따라 자신의 역할을 제대로 수행하지 못하고 있는 사람이 있다면 조직이나 개인 모두에게 손실을 가져오게 된다. 아마도 현재의 교회학교의 부장들이 이러한 존재 중에 하나일 지도 모른다. 부장이라는 공식적이 직위와 직책이 주어져 있으나 자신의 역할이 무엇인지, 무엇을 해야 하는지 모르는 부장이 많이 상존해 있다. 이러한 문제점을 찾아내고 이에 대한 대안을 제시해 보고자 하는 것이 본 논문의 목적이다. 본 논문의 목적을 조사하기 위하여 역할인식과 역할수행에 대한 다섯 가지의 영역에 대하여 23개의 질문과 이들의 개인적 배경에 대한 12가지 질문으로 이를 조사하였다. 먼저 교회학교 부장들의 일반적인 속성은 남성, 41-50세, 대졸이 다수이었으며, 약 15년 정도의 교사 경력과 약 5년 정도의 부장 경력이 있었다. 소명감은 ‘약간 강하다’를 상회하는 4.56점이었고, 역할인식은 Likert식 5점 만점에서 3.88점, 역할수행은 3.49점 정도를 보여주었다. 연구 결과 조사대상자들의 개인적 속성과 사역배경과 역할인식 및 역할수행에서는 통계적으로 차이가 없었으며, 또한 교사로서의 경력과 부장으로서의 경력과 역할인식 및 역할수행의 상관관계도 약간의 정적 상관관계가 있었으나 통계적으로 유의미 하지 않았다. 더욱이 소명감과 이들과의 관계는 거의 상관관계가 없었다. 따라서 이들 조건은 부장의 역할인식과 역할수행에 큰 영향을 주지 않았음을 보여준다. 그러므로 부장의 임명에 있어서 이들 조건보다는 다른 조건을 고려하여 임명하는 것이 필요할 수 있으며 부장들이 부장의 역할수행을 바람직하게 수행하도록 하기 위한 훈련이나 교육프로그램이 요구된다.
