Theravāda Buddhism used to be regarded as inferior to Mahāyāna Buddhism. However, having the deep understanding of the history of Buddhism, we are gradually changing our attitude toward Theravāda Buddhism. Now it has recently spread that Theravāda is closely connected with Buddha's orignal teaching. At last, the formal organizations which claim to stand for Theravāda come into the picture in Korea. In this situation, I became aware of the need to investigate on the identity of Theravāda Buddhism. And I also began to pay attention to the help which we can receive from the examples of Theravāda Buddhism for solving the problems of Korean Buddhism. So, I described in detail the essential characteristics and aspects of Theravāda Buddhism in the beginning of this paper. And then, examining the problems which have existed in Korean Buddhism, I dealt with the settlement programs which we can benchmark from the Theravāda Buddhism. I thought that today's Korean society is different from the traditional society and there should be some preparations which Theravāda Buddhism needs in order to settle down in Korea as well. I focused on these subjects in the latter half of this paper. I set a high value on the fact that Theravāda Buddhism was spontaneously introduced by Koreans who have deep religious beliefs. In fact, many Koreans seem to be favorably disposed for Theravāda Buddhism. I think that if Theravāda Buddhism were settled well in Korea, it would impact positively on Korean Buddhism including all the Buddhistic organizations in Korea. Therefore, I arrived at a conclusion that Theravāda and Korean Buddhism need to maintain the amicable relationship.

한때 테라와다불교는 소승불교라는 비하적인 명칭으로 일컬어지기도 하였다. 그러나 불교사 전반에 걸친 이해가 심화되면서, 붓다의 가르침을 원형에 가깝게 보존하는 종단이라는 인식이 확대되어가고 있다. 급기야 한국 내에서 테라와다불교를 표방하는 단체들이 공식적으로 등장하기에 이르렀다. 이러한 상황에서 필자는 테라와다불교의 정체성을 밝히는 작업이 필요하다는 생각을 갖게 되었다. 아울러 한국불교의 현실에 비추어 그들의 사례로부터 도움을 받을 만한 내용들이 있는지에 관해서도 흥미를 갖게 되었다. 이러한 취지에서 본고의 초반부는 현존하는 남방 테라와다의 특성과 양상에 초점을 맞추어 기술하였다. 한편 본고의 중반부에서는 기존의 한국불교 종단들에서 노출된 문제점을 진단하고 그것의 해소 방안으로서 테라와다불교의 사례로부터 도움을 받을 수 있는 사항들에 대해 구체적으로 다루었다. 이 과정에서 필자는 오늘날의 한국사회가 그간의 전통사회와 다르다는 언급과 함께, 한국의 현실에 적응하기 위해서는 테라와다불교 스스로 해결해야 할 과제 또한 안고 있다는 사실을 지적하였다. 본고의 후반부에서는 바로 이점에 대해 집중적으로 다루었다. 필자는 한국에서의 테라와다불교가 아직은 나약한 모습을 보이고 있지만 한국인들에 의해 자발적으로 도입되었다는 사실을 높이 평가한다. 필자는 테라와다불교가 잘 정착된다면 특정 종단을 초월하여 한국불교 전반에 걸쳐 긍정적인 영향이 발생하게 될 것이라고 본다. 따라서 기존의 한국불교와 테라와다불교는 동반자적 관계 정립이 필요하다는 것으로 본 논문의 결론을 도출하였다.
