Sunmunchwalyo is an anthology of the famous Chinese and Korea Seon monks, and is published in 1907. This is an anthology of various famous Chinese and Korean Seon monks’writings. Yuun, the editor of Beophae bobeol which is the progenitor of Sunmunchwalyo, states that he edited the book in order to diffuse the conflict between Seon Buddhism and doctrinal Buddhism. However, most of the writings in Sunmunchwalyo are denying or placing low value on doctrinal Buddhism. This tells us that Sunmunchwalyo was edited for the propagation of the superiority of Seon Buddhism over doctrinal Buddhism. Seon Buddhism and doctrinal Buddhism in Korea had been integrated during the Joseon Dynasty. Moreover, doctrinal Buddhism was more popular in early 20th century. Sunmunchwalyo was published in this circumstance, and contributed for the resurrection of Seon Buddhism in the Korean Buddhist tradition by criticizing doctrinal Buddhism and its integration with Seon Buddhism. This book has been translated by several people and considered as the textbook of Seon Buddhism by Korean monks.

20세기 초에 출간된 『禪門撮要』는 중국과 한국의 선사들의 글들을 모은 책이다. 『禪門撮要』의 전신에 해당하는 『法海寶筏』의 편자인 劉雲은 禪과 敎 간의 갈등을 해소하기 위해서 『法海寶筏』을 편찬하였다 하며, 또 그러한 시각은 그 후에도 있다. 그러나 『禪門撮要』에 실린 글들은 대부분이 敎를 부정하거나 폄하하는 내용을 담고 있다. 敎에 대한 禪의 우위를 내세우기 위해 편집된 책으로 보아야 한다. 조선 시대를 거치면서 한국불교는 禪과 敎가 혼합된 상황이 되었다. 특히 근대 초기에 한국불교계에는 교학이 유행을 했다. 그러한 시기에 경허는 간화선을 통해서 한국 불교 전통을 세우려 하였으며, 백용성 역시 선불교의 부흥을 위해 노력했다. 경허는 『禪門撮要』의 편집자로 알려지기도 하였으며, 또 백용성이 이 책을 번역하여 널리 보급하였다. 오늘날 한국불교는 간화선이 주류를 형성하고 있는데, 근대의 시작점에서 출판된 되고 수차례에 걸쳐서 현토 및 한글 번역이 된 『禪門撮要』는 한국불교에서 禪敎 통합적 상황을 지양하고 선불교 전통을 확립하는 데 큰 영향을 미쳤다.
