Kim, Si-seup known by the pen name of Maewoldang who was a writer and profound thinker of the 15th century put his about 40 years' wandering life into words. It shows that he is a poet who expresses almost everything from man's thoughts and feelings to tangible and intangible metaphysics through the poetry. Maewoldang's art is the expression of his life and mind. An aesthetic structure forms the basis of his thought system, which is embodied in his works of art. Kim, Si-seup's view of aesthetics is close to that of Chuang Tzu. As Chuang Tzu's metaphysical quest of realities is about the solution of the harsh pain of the realities that has never been experienced, so Kim Si-seup faces up to the fact that the pain of the realities comes from the relations between the subjective and the objective. In other words, he meditates on the nature through wandering life, and shows his thoughts in a positive view of life by expressing his realities metaphorically in his poems. As a result, despite the unreasonable realities, he makes up a system of thoughts that does not criticize and reject but fully accept the realities. His literature which is based on the system of thoughts bears fruit in aesthetics of ‘eudaimonia as the absolute spiritual freedom (遊)’. The ultimate world that Kim, Si-seup seeks for in his literature is the transcendental state of freedom and ease (遊). This transcendentalism (遊) is just the symbol of his spiritual awakening. At the same time, his transcendentalism (遊) is full of life, energetic and powerful. The energy of life can be explained by generosity, which is redefined as liberal-mindedness (宕). This energy extends to unlimited imagination of poetic objects, which is again expressed in a romantic tinge like enjoying natural beauty in the open air (風). So, liberal-mindedness (宕) and enjoying natural beauty in the open air (風) are the key concepts to enter the world of freedom and ease(遊), and the ways of embodying aestheticism. The literature, for him, is a way of expressing the truth of life without any restriction by the established internal or external rules. Even though he lived in obscurity and solitude all his life, the way he lived shows a new passage. The passage leads to another passage, making a history in a long time. Accordingly, the way that Kim, Si-seup followed in solitude obtained life because of the solitude. Freedom and ease (遊) as an aesthetic idea found in the way that he followed is not only his own thought, but the artistic spirit that covers the whole world of Korean literary aesthetics.

매월당 김시습은 15세기 문인이자 사상가로서 약 40여년 간의 방랑을 시로 표출하였다. 그것은 시를 통해 인간의 사상과 감정 그리고 유․무형의 형이상에 이르기까지 거의 모든 것을 표현한 시인이었음을 보여준다. 매월당의 예술은 그의 삶이자 곧 정신이다. 사유체계 그 근저에 미학적 구조가 놓여있으며 이는 다시 예술적 양식으로 구현된다. 이는 김시습에게 있어서 미학적인 것과 인식론적인 것은 분리할 수 없는 일체를 이루고 있는 개념임을 의미한다. 이러한 김시습의 미학관은 장자의 심미관에 근접되어 있다. 장자의 형이상학적 실재탐구는 미증유의 현실적 고통을 해결하기 위해 사유되고 있으며 김시습 또한 현실적 고통의 문제가 物과 我의 관계에서 비롯된 문제임을 직시한다. 다시 말해 방랑을 통해 자연을 관조했으며 그 속에 자신의 현실을 은유함으로써 현실을 긍정하는 사유세계를 펼친 것이다. 그 결과 비록 불합리한 현실일지라도 비판과 분별로 일관하지 않는 현실대긍정의 인식체계를 형성했다. 그 바탕위에 표현된 문학은 ‘遊’의 미학사상으로 그 결실을 맺는다. 김시습이 문학을 통해 추구하고자 했던 궁극적 세계는 초월적 세계인 遊의 경지이다. 김시습에게 있어 遊는 바로 깨달음의 표상이라 할 수 있다. 한편 김시습이 추구했던 遊는 생동감 있는 것으로 역동적이며 힘이 있다. 삶의 역동성은 대범성으로 설명되며 그것은 宕으로 정립될 수 있다. 이러한 역동성은 시적 대상에 대한 무한한 상상으로 이어지며 이는 낭만적 풍조인 風을 통해 표출된다. 그런 까닭으로 宕 - 風은 遊의 세계로 진입하는 핵심적인 개념이자 미의 구현방법이다. 김시습에게 문학이란 기존의 내면적 외면적 규범에 얽매이지 않고 삶의 진실을 표현하게 하는 통로이다. 비록 불우하고 고독한 삶일지라도 그가 걸어가는 길에서는 오히려 새로운 길을 발견하게 되는 것이다. 길은 길을 낳고 그 길은 장구한 세월 속에 역사를 만들어간다. 따라서 김시습의 길은 고독함으로 인해 오히려 생명을 얻을 수 있었다. 그 길에 형성된 미학사상으로서 遊는 김시습만의 독자적인 것이 아니라 한국문예미학 전반에 흐르는 예술정신일 것이다.
