This study was performed to explore the joint effect of temporal distance and consumer product knowledge on product attitude. Results indicate that low knowledge (LK) participants in the distant future condition evaluated the target product more favorably than those who are in the near future condition. However, high knowledge (HK) participants in the near future condition evaluated the target product more favorably than those who are in the distant future condition. Secondly, for LK participants in the near future condition, there was no difference between attitudes of attribute based and benefit based products. Attitudes of HK participants for both products were not different each other, either, which was unpredictable. Finally, whereas LK participants in the distant future condition evaluated the benefit based product more favorably than the attribute based product, HK participants in the distant future condition evaluated both products equally. Implications of the role of temporal distance and product knowledge in product evaluation and future research were discussed.
