The bigger the needs for emotion all over the society grow, the more demand forillustration and bigger importance for the function of it gets at the same time. According to this, the function of illustration is being expanded to high-dimensional field effective to the development of mental state and behavior, as the function of illustration is diversified and multi-functional. Recently, in the elementary school, emotional education, along with existing humanity education and intelligence education based on Ji-Duk-Che(Intelligence, Virtue, and Body), is aimed at. The reason for this could be that ‘Emotion’became so trendy for all the fields and classes in society that it could be affected down to elementary school students. However, the reason that visual and emotional experience they get during their elementary school years can affect their life-long emotional quotient (EQ) that is creativity which makes them use their right side of the brain is more than the first one. In this period, visual recognition can be mostly effective when developing and forming not only emotion but also sociality, intelligence, morality, identity, sentiment, and so on. Thus, visual recognition utilizing easily understandable, friendly, and emotional illustrationcan be expected to give positive effect on development of mental and behavior of elementary school students. Therefore, this research made its goal to set up functional illustration which can give visual recognition as detailed guidelines for colors and shapes, and made progress with both theoretical research through referring to sundry records and positive research through examining similar examples directly which had been actually applied to. As a result of the research, it could be found out that particular colors and shapes should be applied to illustrations individually for detailed places anddifferent grades. For the first key strategy, physical incidents and social problems occurringin elementary school period can be treated with therapy-like functions of illustrations, and those functions can affect positively on mental state itself. Secondly, by having a thorough grip of matters in behavior development essentially required in elementary school period, it could be understood thatthere exist illustrations with particular colors and shapes for each matter and they can give effective action of visual recognition. Lastly, it could be figured out that the effect of learning can be improved by making them accept the contents which they should learn during proper period friendly and in easily-understood way through illustrations reflecting particular colors and shapes. On the basis of the research result above, I would like to find out expanded functions of illustrations and present new paradigm and direction for them.

현재의 일러스트레이션은 일러스트레이션을 접하는 사람으로 하여금 감성을 자극하여 손쉽게 문화를 이해하게 하며 이를 통해 효과적인 마케팅 툴로써 자리매김하고 있다. 사회 전반에 걸친 감성에 대한 니즈가 커질수록 일러스트레이션의 수요가 증가하며 그 기능의 중요성도 함께 부각되고 있다. 이에 따라 일러스트레이션의 기능도 다각화, 다기능화 되면서 심리와 행동발달에 영향을 주는 고차원적인 영역으로 확장되고 있다. 최근 초등학교에서는 기존의 지·덕·체를 토대로 한 인성, 지성 교육과 함께 감성 교육을 지향하고 있다. 사회 모든 분야와 계층에서 '감성'이 트렌드가 되어 초등학교까지 영향을 미친 이유도 있지만, 그보다 초등학교 때 받은 시각적인 감성 경험이 평생의 감성지수, 곧 우뇌를 사용하는 창의력에 영향을 준다는 이유가 더욱 크다 할 수 있다. 이 시기에는 감성, 사회성, 지성, 도덕성, 정체성, 정서 등을 형성·발달하게 되는데 시각적인 인지작용을 통해서 가장 큰 영향을 받게 된다. 따라서 이해하기 쉽고, 친근하며 감성적인 일러스트레이션을 활용한 시각적인 인지 작용은 초등학생의 심리 및 행동발달에 긍정적인 영향을 줄 수 있을 것으로 기대할 수 있다. 이에 본 연구는 시각적인 인지 작용을 줄 수 있는 기능적인 일러스트레이션을 색채와 형태 등의 구체화된 가이드라인을 설정하여 본 연구의 목표로 삼았으며, 각종 문헌과 사료 조사를 통한 이론적 연구와 방문 조사를 통한 실증적 연구를 함께 진행하였다. 연구의 결과로 학교의 세부 장소와 학년에 따라 특정 색채와 형태를 일러스트레이션에 적용해야 하는 것을 알 수 있었다. 핵심이 되는 전략으로 첫째, 초등학교시기에 야기되는 신체적인 사고와 사회문제를 특정 색채와 형태가 반영된 일러스트레이션의 테라피적인 기능으로 심리를 케어하며, 심리적으로 긍정적인 영향을 끼칠 수 있다. 둘째, 초등학교시기에 필수적으로 요구되는 행동발달 사항을 파악하여 각 사항에 맞춰진 특정 색채와, 형태의 일러스트레이션이 존재하며, 효과적인 시각적 인지 작용을 줄 수 있다. 셋째, 해당시기에 학습해야할 내용을 특정 색채와 형태를 반영한 일러스트레이션을 통해서 친근하고 이해하기 쉽게 받아들이도록 하여 학습효과를 높일 수 있다. 위의 연구 결과를 토대로 일러스트레이션의 확장된 기능을 찾고, 일러스트레이션의 새로운 패러다임과 방향을 제시하고자 한다.
