This paper examines the early maladaptive schema and the coping style of pathological gamblers. As a significant schematic distinction from problem gamblers, pathological gamblers shows the schema of abandonment/instability, defectiveness/shame, ependence/incompetence as well as insufficient self-control/incompetence. Further inspection shows that the coping style of pathological gamblers tend to be more suppressive than that of social/problem gamblers by showing signs of denial and avoidance of problems. Reactions of the former are characterized by more explosive emotion, distorted reasoning, impulsion, and confusion in recognition. The result of this paper will be useful to support theories on characteristics of pathological gamblers personality.

본 연구는 병적 도박자의 초기 부적응 도식과 대처방식에 대해 알아보고자 하였다. 병적 도박자들이 사교성 및 문제성 도박자 집단에 비해 유의미한 차이를 보인 도식은 유기/불안정도식, 결함/수치심 도식, 의존/무능감 도식 및 부족한 자기통제/자기훈련 도식으로 나타났다. 또한 도박 집단별 대처방식의 차이를 알아본 결과, 병적 도박자 집단은 사교성/문제성 도박자 집단에 비해 문제를 부정하고 회피적 경향을 나타내는 억제적 대처방식과 강렬한 감정 반응, 왜곡된 지각, 충동적 대응 및 인지적 혼란을 동반하는 즉각적 대처방식을 많이 사용하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과들은 병적 도박자의 성격적 특성을 설명할 수 있는 기초자료가 될 것이다.
