Development of Passive Cooling Vest with Sun Reflection and Ventilation for Heat Stress Reduction of Outdoor Worker in Summer

Most outdoor workers such as the carpenter, the frame worker, the concrete finisher, the steel fixer, the electrician, the plumber are suffered from the heat stress at the building construction site in summer. For the reduction of their heat stress, some researchers and manufactures provide them with the VV(Ventilation Vest with net cloth) but the VV had a shortcoming such as the permeation of sun radiation. This research developed a PCV(Passive Cooling Vest) sample that attached the sun reflection louver on the existed VV, for more reduction of their heat stress. The PCV have two functions. One is the sun radiation reflection through the horizontal narrow
reflection louver(L type aluminum film, dimension is 5×5㎜, installation pitch is 10㎜, reflectance is 0.9). The other is the ventilation through the net cloth. Also, this research measured MST(Mean Skin Temperature) and thermal environment parameters, and it asked TSV(Thermal
Sensation Vote 7scale) and DISC(Thermal Discomfort 11scale) for the 4 voluntary subjects who are each subject wearing PCV, VV, TTV(Traditional Textile Vest) in due sequence. Factors are measured in the experiment room where the controlled conditions were the radiation 600(W/㎡), DBT 29(℃), air velocity 2.0(m/sec). TSVs and DISCs of subjects when wearing PCV were approximately 1~2 lower than when wearing VV or TTV. MST of subjects when wearing PCV were approximately 1.2℃ lower than when wearing VV or TTV. In conclusion, the PCV in this research can support more reduction of heat stress for the outdoor workers at building
construction site in summer.
