Identity is a way to contextualize individuality and community, as well as a means by which we come to understand others through collections of cultural and historical knowledge. Identity development and understanding are messy concepts, broad in definition and, grounded in fragmentation and dualism. Identity, by nature, is transitory self-centered thinking and as such, impacts our perceptions and experiences with and of the world. Identity impacts the cultural and historical frameworks, which form: how we are grouped and identified, which is based on race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, nationality, socioeconomic status, narratives and history to name a few. This paper explores some of the complexities and subtleties of identity from both a personal and scholarly vantage point that utilizes critical race theory through counter narratives, ultimately raising questions of how identity formation can be addressed through education.
