Maecheon Hwang Hyeon(1855～1910) lived an active literary life from the later 19th century to the early 20th century. He was one of the intellectuals who chose suicide over anything else as a way of resisting the Japanese annexation of Korea in 1910. Much research to date on his work and life, especially his poetry that was highly honored among many people after his time as well as his contemporaries has centered on the influences of Chinese poets like Du Bo, So Sik, and Yuk Yu. on his poetry. This study discussed his tendencies and interests directed to educational poetry through exploring his famous "Jib-Ryeon", a collection of various poets' works which he edited and published for making it as a primer for entry level poet learners, showing his usual attitudes towards educational poetry. Meacheon brought up many examples from poems by Du Bo, So Sik, and Yuk Yu, as seen in existing research. However this does not mean that he neglected other important poems written by poets in Chinese Qing period, Joseon Hoosaga (referring to the greatest four poets of the late Joseon period: Pak Je-Ga, Lee Deok-Moo, Yu Deuk-Gong, and Lee Seo-Gu), Jaha, and also his contemporary, Baek Rak-Yun in taking examples. This suggests that there is a need to take a new perspective in exploring Meacheon's writing in the hope of exposing his deep interests in exemplary works that were expressive of empathetic understanding of the situation facing his contemporary people. Indeed, it is noteworthy that he allowed for the importance of poems found in the actual settings, not constricted to the old particular poems, in his presenting exemplary poems.

매천 황현(1855~1910)은 19세기 말 20세기 초에 활동한 문인이다. 그는 1910년 한일병합이 이뤄졌을 때, 지식인으로 자결을 선택한 인물이다. 지금까지 매천에 관한 연구가 많이 있었다. 특히 그의 시는 그 당시 사람들은 물론 후세 사람들까지 높이 평가하고 있다. 그래서 시에 따른 연구가 대부분이다. 그런데 매천의 시를 두보, 소식, 육유 등 중국 시인들의 영향 속에서 연구하려는 경향이 있었다. 이 연구에서는 매천이 편집․간행한『집련』에 대해 소개하고, 이를 통해 그의 학시 경향에 대해서 논의를 펼쳤다. 매천은 시를 배우는 초학자들에게 입문서가 될 목적으로 역대 시인들의 연구만을 모아서『집련』을 편집하였다. 이러한 목적은 매천이 평소 가지고 있는 학시의 모습으로 볼 수도 있다. 매천은『집련』에서 기존의 논의처럼 두보, 소식, 육유를 많이 인용하여 모범으로 삼았다. 하지만, 중국 청나라 시인의 시, 조선의 후사가와 자하시, 동시대의 백낙륜의 시 등에도 비중을 두어 모범으로 제시하고 있다. 이 점은 매천의 입장에서 생각해 볼 필요가 있다. 매천은 시를 지을 때, 자신이 살고 있는 시대에 유행하는 것에 초점을 둘 필요성이 있다는 것이다. 즉, 현실과 공감이 되는 작품을 모범으로 하여 짓는 것이다. 이러한 그의 모습은 옛 것에 얽매이지 않고, 현실을 인정하려는 것으로 주목해야 할 사항이다.
