This study used content analysis to examine the trends of researches concerning community-oriented policing in Korea. In the National Assembly Library and Korea Education & Research Information Service, total 80 researches(43 articles, 33 masters', and 4 doctoral theses), published between 1996 and 2008, were selected for the target of this study. The main findings of this study are like these ; First, community-oriented policing researches have been done steadily in the Korean academic field. But, around 2003, those studies were expanded widely because, in that year, Korean local police system was changed and police officers were required to practice community-oriented policing. Second, most of community-oriented policing researches(about 75%) were done by scholars of police science & public administration. Third, the purpose of research for the study of community-oriented policing was more likely to be conceptual(about 81%) rather than to explore bivariate and multivariate relationships between variables. Fourth, more studies were done using descriptive approach(about 86%) rather than statistical approach. Finally, many programs were cited as representing community-oriented policing and as many problems were noted as precluding successful operations in Korea. But, those problems and improvements asserted did not varied as time frame changes and were not proved by scientific methods. Some implications of this analysis including interdisciplinary study needs and some issues that should be considered in the future study of community-oriented policing were discussed in the conclusion.

본 연구에서는 국내에서 발표된 지역사회경찰활동 연구들을 고찰하여 해당 연구의 경향을 분석하고 향후 전망과 과제에 대하여 조망해 보는 것을 주요 연구 목적으로 하였다. 이를 위해 1996년부터 2008년까지 발간된 학술지 게재 논문과 학위(석ㆍ박사) 논문들을 대상으로 내용분석을 실시하였다. 분석결과 우리나라에서의 지역사회경찰활동에 관한 연구는 2008년을 기준으로 학술논문과 학위논문에서만 80편에 달하는 연구 성과를 보여줌으로써 경찰학 담론을 주도하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 특히 2003년 이후 지역사회경찰활동 수행이 규범화됨에 따라 관련 연구가 이론적 논의에서부터 실천적인 차원으로 확대되는 기반이 마련되었고 이에 따라 연구자 구성 및 연구 성격의 다변화도 모색되어 왔다. 그러나 여전히 경찰(행정)학자 중심의 연구자 편중성과 개념적 연구와 서술적 연구의 과다 지향성의 문제로부터 자유롭지 못한 것이 현실이고, 이로 인해 관련 논의의 중복성과 제기되는 쟁점들의 상대적 빈약성이라는 문제들을 표출하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구 결과를 토대로 향후 지역사회경찰활동 연구는 계량적 연구의 활성화, 인과구조에 대한 보다 정치한 연구 수행, 그리고 학제적 연구 활성화라는 과제를 부여받고 있음을 적시하였다.
