, a sequel to a very popular novel , is a kind of heroic novel. Generally a sequel follows the plot and theme of the original text, however is different case. That is the story of is the separation from parents which is caused by an unexpected disaster and a crisis but that of is voluntary separation. The first war in is not a kind of victory or defeat. It is a war between an alliance with the good and evil and the good. The first war helps Youngmoon(龍門) who is one of an alliance with the good and evil
not to serve the king who is not worthy of the name of king. Ultimately, after meeting a merciful and sage king, Youngmoon gets a great achieve -ment beating the evil in the second war. The novel intends to maintain an order of the world which is China-centered. Most of heroic novels deal with the process of overcome and restoration. Young generation got over the crisis passed down from past generations and retrieved an honor of his family. However is different from others, so we have to focus on it in different way not as a sequel.

<용문전>은 인기 작품의 하나였던 <소대성전>의 속편으로 영웅소설 유형의 작품이다. 속편이라고 해서 전작의 구성체계나 작품의도를 꼭 그대로만 이어받은 것 은 아니다. 곧, <소대성전>은 뜻밖의 재난이나 위기에 의해 부모와 분리되지만, <용문전>은 자발적 선택에 의해 부모와 분리되고 있는 점이 그렇다. <용문전>에서의 1차 싸움은 ‘선과 악의 혼합세력’과 ‘선만의 세력’ 간의 싸움이어서 승패를 결정짓는 싸움이 아니라는 점에서 이채로우며, ‘선과 악의 혼합세력’의 일원이었던 용문이 이 1차 싸움에서 임금답지 못한 임금을 섬기지 않을 수도 있는 계기를 만들어 내는 기능을 하고 있다. 결국 어진 성군을 만난 뒤의 2차 싸움에서 악만의 세력을 징치함으로써 대업을 이룬다. 중국을 구심점으로 한 세계의 질서를 유지하려는 의도를 드러낸 작품이라 할 것이다. 대부분의 영웅소설이 이유야 어떠하든 기성세대가 물려준 가문의 몰락이라는 결핍적 요소를 신세대인 자식세대에서 극복하고 가문의 영광을 회복해내는 것과는 <용문전>은 사뭇 다르다. 단지 <소대성전>의 속편 또는 하권으로서 <용문전>을 살펴서는 아니 될 것이다. 이 글은 완판 38장본 <용문전>에 대해 해제를 쓰고, 텍스트에 대한 교정과 주석작업을 병행한 것이다.
