Damhon, after returning from Peking, China, wrote an unpredecented record of friendship, Making Friends at Ganjong-dong. Two kinds of different responses were issued. The one was from his friends Hyongam, Chojong, Yonam and Chongsung, who, deeply touched, read the record as
evidence of genuine friendship and as data of reflecting Chosun society. The other denigrated his making friends with barbarians, not Chinese scholars. These different reactions could be treated as a touchstone to read Chosun society and show the many faceted text of Making Friends at Ganjong-dong. Moreover debates on friendship developed into reviewing a sensitive issue, Sinocentrism or Chosun-Sinocentrism which had been taken granted for. Through a series of debates new dimension of Sinocentrism was appeared and accordingly its value reestablished. Applying Foucault's term, discourse, it might be a typical case for discourse formation. The pros and cons altogether helped give birth to it. As a text, Making Friends at Ganjong-dong is a felicitous example of a discourse study for it displays complexities of responses.

담헌이 중국을 다녀와 『회우록』이라는 전례없는 우정의 기록을 남겼다. 이 기록을 두고 형암, 초정, 연암, 청성 등이 중국선비와 나눈 우정에 감복하며 그에 상응해 낙후된 조선의 현실을 반성하는 자료로 읽었다. 이와 반대로 중국선비와 교제한 사실을 오랑캐와 사귄 것으로 보고 비판하는 글도 있었다.
이런 다양한 반응은『회우록』이라는 텍스트가 가진 다양한 층위를 드러내면서 조선사회를 읽는 시금석이 된다. 동시에 (조선)중화주의라고 하는 예민한 문제가 논쟁으로 부각되면서 자명한 것으로 보였던 사상이 재검토 되었다. 이러한 과정을 통해 드러나지 않았던 새로운 면모가 밝혀지면서 중화주의의 가치가 재확립된다. 긍정적 영향이든 부정적 영향이든 중화주의가 전면에 나서게 된 것이다. 이는 가치
판단이나 시비를 가리는 차원이 아니라 새로운 담론이 형성되고 탄생하는 푸코적 의미에서 논의되어야 할 것이다. 또한 논쟁에 참여한 인물들의 단순치 않은 관계를 볼 때 중화사상을 한쪽 편으로만 놓는 시각도 문제를 안이하게 접근하는 방식이라 할 수 있다. 대상과 참여자 모두 복잡하게 얽혀 있었던 것이다. 󰡔회우록󰡕은 이런 반응의 복합성을 보여준다는 점에서 담론 연구의 한 예로 적합해 보인다.
