This study aimed at devising a way to systematically preserve and manage old books and documents kept in an individual's or a family's place which held lots of ancient literature. Specifically, the study tried to establish the system for preserving ancient literature through creating and using the statement of preservation and management. For the systematic preservation of an individual's or a family's old books and documents, it is urgent to improve very poor preservation conditions, including preservation facilities completely vulnerable to being stolen and fire and the lack of awareness of the importance of preserving old literature. The minimum support the Cultural Properties Administration or an inspection agency can provide to preserve ancient literature includes the offering of items, such as paper boxes for storing, neutral sheet, and parasites- and moisture-removal device, and creating the education system for preserving and managing ancient literature. In addition, the systematic use of the statement of preservation and management, along with creating a list of ancient literature, is required. Furthermore, based on this, the system of preserving and managing ancient literature needs to be established. The statement of preservation and management should be created in link with the list of old books and documents kept in place which holds a great deal of ancient literature. Flexible operation will be possible when ancient literature is operated in the framework of the system of preservation and management through the step-by-step classification of preservation. The creation and computerization of the statement of preservation and management will be core materials.

이 연구는 개인이나 문중의 고문헌 다량소장처에 소장된 고서․고문서의 보존관리를 위한 방법과 체계화를 위한 방안을 마련해 보고자 한 것이다. 이 글에서는 보다 구체적으로 해결할 수 있는 방안으로 보존관리 조사표의 작성․활용과 이를 통한 체계의 수립을 시도하였다. 개인이나 문중의 고서․고문서의 보존관리방안과 그 체계화를 위한 기본적인 방향으로 보존관리의 측면에서 시급히 필요한 사안을 든다면 보관․도난․화재에 무방비인 보존시설, 보존관리에 관한 인식부족 등 매우 열악한 상황에 놓여 있는 보존 여건을 하루빨리 개선하는 것이다. 문화재청이나 조사기관이 지원할 수 있는 최소한의 보존지원책은 보관용 종이상자, 중성시트, 방충․제습장치 등 물품의 제공과 더불어 정기적 보존관리교육 시스템을 마련하는 것이다. 또한 지역별 위탁보관시설 설립, 중앙 및 거점보존관리기관 확정, 보존처리 인력의 확충 등은 장기적인 안목으로 지금부터 한 단계씩 진행시켜 나가야 할 것이다. 또한 목록작성과 더불어 이루어져야 할 보존관리조사표의 체계적 활용과 이를 바탕으로 한 보존관리체계의 확립이 매우 필요하다. 보존관리조사표 작성은 다량소장처 고서․고문서목록과 연계하여 진행해야 하여야 한다. 이는 보존처리의 단계별 유형화를 통하여 보존관리체계의 틀 내에서 운용되어야 유기적인 운용이 가능할 것이며, 보존관리조사표의 작성 및 전산화는 그 핵심재료가 될 것이다.
