This study discusses how to conduct a survey to find out the volume of old documents with cultural heritage in private storage. It also looks into the necessity of such a survey. Along with the result of previous surveys, it presents measures to take in the future and reveals the potential and benefits of utilizing such a survey. Due to their vulnerable nature, old documents stored and handled by individuals are in danger of theft and damage. For their protection, we need to conduct a nationwide survey to make a combined inventory and learn more about the national knowledge resource. We should also come up with a method for utilizing the survey as elementary material for researchers in relevant fields. For a successful survey, we need to extend subjects of the survey and standardize its procedures. Conducting the survey will provide basic data for the Korean Old Documents Collection Catalog Database. It will also lead to an online service for a collection catalog as well as the standardization of cataloging rules and subcategories. It can be used as basic research material for Korean studies. In addition, a nationwide survey will significantly decrease the cost for redundant basic surveys and bring many other benefits: the discovery of new documents not known to the public, the change of knowledge into a resource, the publishing of a national catalogue for old documents, the standardization of such a catalogue, the creation of a sample standard of an old document, etc. All the outcomes are expected to bring more attention to Korean studies.

이 연구는 개인이나 문중의 고문헌 다량소장처에 소장된 전적문화재 실태조사를 위한 방법과 나아가야 할 방향을 고찰한 것이다. 실태조사의 필요성을 살피고 지금까지 행해진 실태조사의 사례와 그 성과를 제시하여 앞으로의 과제와 활용방안 및 기대효과를 구체적으로 알아보았다. 민간차원에서 보존․관리되고 있는 고문헌은 자료의 특성상 쉽게 도난당하거나 훼손될 위험에 방치되어 있다. 그리하여 전국적인 실태조사를 토대로 종합적인 종합목록을 작성해서 국가적 지식자원을 파악하고, 관련 연구자에게 학문연구의 기초자료로 제공하여 활용할 수 있는 방안이 필요하다. 향후 실태조사를 함에 조사대상의 확대, 조사과정의 표준화가 이루어져야 하며, 이를 바탕으로 한국 고문헌 종합목록 DB의 기초데이터를 제시할 것이며 서지종합목록의 인터넷 서비스, 목록의 기술규칙 및 분류세목의 표준화를 확립하고 한국학 학술연구의 기초자료로 활용될 수 있다. 또한 국가적인 실태조사는 기초 중복 조사비용의 획기적 절감을 가져오고, 미공개 신 자료의 발굴 및 지식자원화, 고문헌의 국가서지 편찬과 국가고문헌서지의 표준화는 물론 고문헌의 표준본을 설정하여 한국학연구의 활성화를 가져올 것으로 기대된다.
