The purpose of this study was to examine the understanding of elementary teachers responsible for planning on, managing and evaluating experiential learning about their learning and awareness of its management and problems.
The major findings of the study were as follows:
First, the teachers investigated had a different understanding of the educational meaning of experiential learning, its utilization, pre-activities and post-activities according to their career and experiential learning training experiences.
Second, the largest group believed that the object of experiential learning was to gain ample experiences by taking advantage of local resources available, and they had a different opinion on that according to grade in charge.
Third, in terms of experiential learning management, the largest group was concerned about the possibility of safety accidents and had difficulties in guidance.
The findings of the study suggested that the elementary teachers gradually got to see experiential learning as a process of nurturing well- rounded people by letting learners improve their knowledge and values in association with their past experiences instead of merely looking at it as taking a tour of a particular place. It is especially noteworthy that such a change of mind-set took place among the teachers who were well experienced and took a lot of training courses.

본 연구는 체험학습을 기획․운영․평가하는 초등 교사들이 체험학습을 어떻게 이해하고 있고, 운영 과정 및 운영상의 문제점에 대하여 어떻게 인식하고 있는지 조사․분석하는데 그 목적이 있다.
연구 문제에 따른 주요 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 체험학습의 교육적 의미와 활용, 사전 및 사후 활동에 대한 전체적인 이해는 교직 경력, 체험학습 연수 경험에 따라 유의한 차이가 나타났다.
둘째, 체험학습 운영의 목적으로 지역 사회 자원을 활용한 풍부한 경험 획득을 가장 많이 꼽았으며, 담임학년에 따라 유의미한 차이가 있었다. 사전활동 방법으로 필요한 정보를 학생들과 함께 직접 찾아보는 활동을 가장 많이 꼽았으며, 담임학년에 따라 유의미한 차이를 보였다.
셋째, 체험학습 운영에서 학생과 관련하여 안전사고 또는 학생 지도의 어려움을 가장 많이 꼽았으며, 담임학년의 학급 수와 연수 경험의 유무에 따라 유의미한 차이가 나타났다. 체험학습 활성화를 위해 가장 필요한 것은 보조 인력의 확보로 교사 대 학생의 인솔 비율을 축소해야 한다는 응답이 가장 많았으며, 교직경력에 따라 유의미한 차이가 나타났다.
본 연구의 결과를 종합해 볼 때, 초등 교사들은 체험학습을 체험학습 과정에서 발생한 지식과 기능 그리고 가치를 학습자의 경험 세계와 유기적인 관련을 맺어 확장시킴으로써 균형 잡힌 인간을 기르기 위한 과정으로 인식하고 있는데, 이러한 인식이 경력이 많은 교사, 연수 경험이 있는 교사를 중심으로 높게 나타나는 것으로 보아 초등 교사들의 체험학습 운영에 필요한 학문적, 실제적 이해 증진을 위한 연수 프로그램이 개발될 필요가 있음을 시사 받을 수 있다.
