One of the main factors to develop in advanced countries in Korea is due to educated people. The educational myth expressed with rising in the world and gaining fame that all people would wish to it so as to recognize importance of education. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the developing process of credentialism to cope with overeducation in Korea. The meaning of credentialism came to be regarded as a key factor of social status in Korea. So the credentialism appeared to have idealogical nature, which could lead the distortion the education and schooling. Korean credentialism was appeared social status competition triggered by social structure, the over education and the excessive private educational expenditure. credential decided on socioeconomic status such as occupation and wages, and worked to symbols of upward mobility. But since the mid-1980s, Korean society was given credential inflation, overeducation, unemployed, and early study abroad. To break down credentialism, it is needed various competency assessment such as national qualification framework, key competence for lifelong learning. And it will be emphasized career education, assessment experiential learning and vocational education in higher education.

우리 사회의 사회경제적 성장은 높은 교육열로 양질의 인재를 확보하였기에 가능하였다. 입신양명으로 표현되는 교육 신화는 모든 국민들로 하여금 교육에 높은 가치를 부여하였고, 학력 획득을 위한 경쟁에 모든 국민이 참여하게 되었다. 본 논문은 우리나라에서 학력주의가 어떻게 전개되어 왔으며 이의 긍정적, 부정적 요인을 분석한 후 이를 대처하기 위한 방안을 모색하고자 한다. 학력주의는 수단적 교육관과 높은 교육열에 의하여 생겨났다. 학력이 직업과 임금 등 사회경제적 배경을 결정하는 요인으로 작용하였고, 신분 상승의 표상으로 작용하였다. 그러나 1980년대 중반부터 나타난 학력 인플레이션 현상은 고학력자의 실업으로 연결되었으며, 해외 조기 유학으로 나타났다. 능력을 판단하는 객관적인 기준을 갖추지 못한 상태에서는 학력위주의 사회구조에서 능력주의사회로 전환하는 것은 지난한 일이다. 능력을 판단하는 평생학습 역량을 설정하고 이를 통하여 개인의 능력을 판단할 필요가 있다. 또한 이를 기반으로 전 생애에 걸친 교육목표와 교육과정을 설계할 필요가 있다.
