This article is about Donghak's way of cultivating the mind, which was built and developed by three masters of Donghak, a Korean religion. Su-un, the founder of Donghak, realized the truth of life and the universe through a long period of prayer and meditation, and named it Donghak. One of the most important doctrines is 'sicheonju', which means that human beings has the features of Hanul, or God in the body. He said that people have to recite the 21words with the whole heart in order to be aware of 'sicheonju'. While the Confucian way of cultivating the mind was complicated, Su-un's way was very easy and simple. Just keeping on reciting the 21 words is enough, and anyone could follow it.
Haewol, one of Su-un's disciples and the second leader of Donghak, made Su-un's way effective so that whoever wants to cultivate the mind can follow it more easily. However, people are likely to neglect the way because of its easiness. That is why Haewol emphasized sincerity. this means that he adjusted Su-un's way to the level of common people.
Euam, one of Haewol's disciple and the third leader, declared that it was important to be aware of the existence of Hanul in the body, and presented another way of cultivating the mind, which was to put the meaning of the 21words in question. This way is thought to reveal the truth more effectively and concretely than just keeping on reciting the 21 words does. These three masters lived great lives by realizing the presence of Hanul in their bodies through reciting the 21words whole-heartedly. And they told us that whoever recite the 21 words whole-heartedly and put the meaning of the 21words in question, can get to the truth.

이 논문은 동학의 세분 스승인 수운 해월 의암의 수양론을 살펴보는 것이다. 수운은 기나긴 공부의 과정을 통해서 동학을 창도하였다. 그는 시천주를 주장하였고 이 경지에 가기 위해서는 21자 주문을 평생동안 잊어버리지 말고 지극 정성으로 공부하라고 했다. 전통적인 성리학의 공부방법이 복잡한 것이었다면 수운의 공부방법은 아주 간단하고 쉬운 방법이었다. 단지 21자 주문을 쉬지않고 공부하면 그만이었다. 그래서 일반 백성들에게 쉽게 다가갈 수 있는 가르침이었다. 이 방법을 계승한 해월은 더욱더 성실하게 스승의 공부방법을 실천하여 일상 생활속에서 누구나 쉽게 실천할 수 있는 공부방법을 만들었다. 공부방법은 쉬웠지만 그의 성실함을 따라갈 사람은 거의 없었다. 해월 공부방법의 의의는 높은 곳에 있던 스승의 가르침을 일반 백성들의 눈높이에 맞게 전개시켰다고 할 수 있다. 해월의 뒤를 계승한 의암은 내안에 모신 한울님을 깨달아야 한다는 사상을 전개했다. 두 분 스승들이 무조건 정성들이라고 한 방법 이외에 21자 주문을 의심하는 방법도 제시했다. 이것은 막연하게 정성을 들이면 된다고 하는 것 외에 좀 더 효과적인 방법을 제시하여 구체적이고 확실한 방법론을 전개했다고 할 수 있다.
이 세분은 지극한 공부를 해서 자신이 모시고 있던 한울님을 체득해서 그 누구도 흉내낼 수 없는 위대한 삶을 사신분이었다. 누구나 정성을 들이면 도달하게 되는 쉬운 방법론이 바로 세 분의 공부방법론이다.
