This thesis studied the characteristics of Toegye, Lee-hwang(退溪 李滉)`s Li-thought.
Toegye emphasized on establishing a theory of the moral subject of human being by developing a theory of moral culture based on 'Jing(敬;Respect)'. In view of this, Toegye pursued of a principled and moralistic social discipline, which was also developed in the direction of admitting the courtesy of the manners and ways of the age in Li-thought as a rule. So, the Li-thought of Toegye has a characteristic that admits the social custom, hence emphasizes on the individual's volition practicing the courtesy according to this custom.
The Li-thought of Toegye focused on the Zhuzijiali(朱子家禮;The book of the customary formalities of a family, written by Sung) and old manners, yet stood in the position that the procedure of carrying out the courtesy could be done following humanity within the range that did not harm its courtesy-originated meaning. In other words, it can be said that it pursued a rational practice of courtesy.

본 논문은 퇴계 이황의 예학사상의 특성에 대하여 고찰한 것이다.
퇴계의 예학사상은 인간의 도덕주체 확립을 위한 경(敬)의 수양론을 기반으로 전개되었다. 퇴계는 경에 형이상(形而上)과 형이하(形而下)를 관통하는 우주론적 의미를 부여하였다. 이러한 수양론의 측면에서 퇴계는 원론적이고 도덕적인 사회 질서를 추구하였고, 이것이 그의 예학사상에 그대로 반영되어 예가 인간 도리의 근본이 된다고 보았다. 퇴계의 예학사상은 󰡔주자가례(朱子家禮)󰡕를 기본으로 하면서도, 고례(古禮)와 시속(時俗)을 조화하려는 의례관(儀禮觀)을 보이고 있다. 그러므로 퇴계 예학사상의 특성은 예의 기본적인 원칙을 벗어나지 않는 수준에서 사회의 관습(慣習)을 인정하고, 이러한 관습에 따라 개인의 예에 대한 실천의지를 강조하였다는 점에서 찾을 수가 있을 것이다.
퇴계의 예학사상은 󰡔주자가례󰡕를 근본으로 하면서도 세세한 예의 적용에서는 시의성(時宜性)을 강조함으로써, 포용적이고 개방적인 태도를 지니고 있었다. 이러한 점에서 퇴계의 영향을 받은 영남학파의 예학이, 비교적 󰡔주자가례󰡕에 충실하려는 기호학파(畿湖學派)의 예학과 구별되는 특성을 갖고 전개되었다고 하겠다.
