A sample and rapid microwave-assisted extraction procedure was developed and optimized for the extraction of homoharringtonine from Cephalotaxus koreana. The biomass, immersed in a methanol, was irradiated with microwaves in a closed-vessel system. The optimal ratio of biomass/methanol, temperature, time and stirrer (agitation) velocity were 1/6 (w/v), 40℃, 15 min and 250 rpm, respectively. The microwave-assisted extraction was more efficient than conventional solvent extraction in terms of yield, throughput, and solvent consumption.
