As our concerns on environmental problems are increasing, there has been much interest in developing sustainable system for the production of chemicals, fuels, and materials from renewable resources. Many microorganisms are capable of producing polyesters known as
polyhydroxyalkanoates. However, microorganisms isolated from nature are often inefficient in performing the desired task. Thus, metabolic engineering has been employed for the improvement of microbial performance. In this lecture, I will describe the past, present,
and the future of microbial polyesters, which will also cover design and production of natural polyesters to unnatural polyesters. Professor Ho Nam Chang’s great contribution to the field will also be described. [This work was supported by the Korean Systems Biology Research
Grant from the MEST. Further supports by LG Chem Chair Professorship, BK21 program, and WCU program of the MEST are appreciated.]
