Recently, the interest in teaching Korean is getting increased, and the interest in the studies on needs analysis or strategies analysis for syllabus design is as well. This study aims at analyzing Korean learners’ needs and vocabulary learning strategies as the fundamentals for developing Korean vocabulary Ⅰ materials. There have rarely been analyses on learners’ needs and strategies for developing vocabulary materials. Moreover, some of those didn’t use statistical processing programs, thus, I am doubtful whether the data is reliable and trustworthy. This study has a few limitations due to the limited sample group in both quality and quantity, though, it shows a statistically meaningful difference in both learners’ needs and learning strategies for vocabulary with applying the questionnaires to SPSS 14.0 K, a statistical processing program. In this study, learners like vocabulary learning methods such as utilizing related knowledge to the theme and guessing the meaning of the word in the context, while they like vocabulary memorizing strategies such as repeating the sound of the words and repeating the words periodically.

이 연구는 한국어 『어휘Ⅰ』교재 개발을 위한 기초 작업으로 한국어 학습자들의 요구와 어휘 학습 전략을 분석하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 그 동안 어휘 교재 개발을 위한 학습자들의 요구와 전략 분석은 드물었을 뿐만 아니라, 통계처리 프로그램을 사용하지 않는 경우도 있어 처리된 자료의 판단이나 신뢰성이 의심스러웠다. 이 연구는 양적, 질적, 그리고 몇 가지 점에서 제한점을 갖지만, 조사된 설문지를 통계분석 프로그램을 활용하여 어휘에 대한 학습자 요구나 학습 전략 분석에서 유의미한 차이를 밝혀낼 수 있었다. 곧 학습자들은 주제와 연관된 지식의 이용이나 문맥을 통한 추측하기와 같은 어휘 학습 방법을 선호하였으며, 어휘 기억 전략으로는 한국인과 의사소통 기회를 갖기, 소리를 반복하여 말하거나 주기적 반복해서 익히는 전략을 선호하였다.
