It was in a novel by Yujeong Kim when Chuncheon started to be portrayed as a setting. Silae village, in Kim's novel, is a place where ordinary people carry on their lives honestly and openly against the desire for life and a place of resistance that indirectly reveals the injustice of the colonial institution. Bongeui mountain, the guardian mountain of Chuncheon, turns a man of autistic tendency into a man of caring, and the house of Yeondang in Hupyeong 1-dong and the nearby forest leads a middle class, middle aged woman to exorcising her past and entering a futuristic realm of a wise man. Joongangro rotary, Gongjicheon and Gongji bridge(Gongjicheon bridge) in the city center of Chuncheon are the creative motivations for writers from Chuncheon and Namchuncheon Station creates the mood for caring others and aspiration and affection towards the unknown world. Soyang river, Soyang river dam and Cheongpyeong Buddhist temple are the places for self-discipline where one can explore the concept of reality, objective self-perception, admiration for reminiscence, death and purity, control of life and providence of the universe. Chuncheon in Korean novels encourages the residents and visitors either to be brave to settle down in the city or to reflect themselves to a larger, universal perspective beyond the complex reality and find larger meanings of life. Chuncheon therefore purifies our polluted lives, connects us to ‘will for life’, ‘the first sensation’ and ‘the power of love’ and to bravely dive into the real world.

소설의 공간 배경으로 춘천이 본격적으로 등장하기 시작한 것은 김유정의 소설작품부터였다. 김유정의 소설 속에서 실레마을은 생의 욕망 앞에 솔직하고 당당하게 민초들이 살아가는 삶의 현장이며 동시에 식민제도의 부당함을 우회적으로 고발하는 저항의 장소가 된다. 춘천의 진산인 봉의산은 자폐적 성격의 남자에게 타인에 대한 배려심을 갖게 하고 후평1동의 연당집과 그 부근의 숲은 중산층 중년여자가 안고 있는 과거의 기억을 떨쳐내고 미래지향적 현자의 영역으로 입문하게 한다. 춘천시의 중심부인 중앙로 로터리와 공지천과 공지교(공지천다리)들은 춘천출신 작가의 고갈된 창작력에 원동력을 충전시켜주고, 남춘천역은 타인에 대한 배려, 미지의 세계에 대한 동경과 사랑을 꿈꾸게 한다. 소양강, 소양강댐, 청평산, 청평사는 현실과 자아에 대한 객관적 인식, 추억과 죽음과 순수에 대한 동경, 현생의 삶을 다스리고 우주적 섭리로 눈 돌리게 하는 수행의 처소가 된다. 한국 소설 속에 그려진 춘천-이곳에 거처하거나 방문해온 사람들에게 용감하게 뿌리내리고 살거나, 잠시 번잡한 현실에서 떠나 우주적 사고 속에 자신을 돌아보고 좀더 큰 삶의 길을 찾아보라고 한다. 그리하여 춘천은 오염된 우리의 삶을 정화시켜주고, ‘생의 의지’와 ‘처음의 감동’과 ‘사랑의 힘’에 접속시켜 우리로 하여금 세상 속에 용감하게 뛰어들게 해준다.
