Many people believe that the reason their lives seem meaningless and unhappy is due to their dissatisfaction of jobs. But according to Viktor Frankl’s logotherapy which states that a person who knows the meaning to their life can overcome any hardships in life, it is not the type of work that brings happiness, meaning and value to one’s life, but the way a person sets his mental attitude toward his or her job.
This article, with a Christian viewpoint, explores the meaning of work by dividing the relational vocation with God as the first vocation and job-related vocation as the second.
Thus through the etymologic, biblical, and Christian-historic meaning of the word “job”, one must understand the meaning of a job not simply as something that brings in wealth, but as a second vocation of calling from God; and that this second vocation would be able to recover its true meaning through the calling of the first vocation from God, or in other words through the restoration of a relationship with Him.
But this article also indicates a problem of the protestant viewpoint of vocation as understanding a job not as a second but first vocation. Secondly, since in career counseling prevention is actually important, the article depicts about the principles distinguishing the jobs God calls as second vocation. Lastly, through the viewpoint of Christian counseling, the article examines the meaning of job and the treatment of unemployment neurosis caused by unemployment.
Truly a job is a vocation given by God as a tool for making this world fit for the coming of Kingdom of God. By recognizing wisely the calling of a vocational job from God and by rejoicing and being thankful through that job would be the way of life to return glory to the living God.

많은 사람들이 자신들의 삶이 의미가 없고 불행한 이유를 직업에의 불만족에 둔다. 그러나 자신의 삶의 이유를 아는 사람은 어떠한 삶도 극복해 간다라는 주장을 하는 Viktor Frankl 로고테라피는 직업의 종류가 아니라 그 직업을 대하는 사람의 마음 가짐이 삶의 가치와 의미 그리고 행복을 가져다준다라고 한다. 본 소고는 기독교적 관점에서 하나님과의 관계적 소명인 일차적 소명과 직업적 소명인 이차적
소명을 나누어서 직업의 의미를 살펴 보았다. 곧 직업이라는 단어가 가지고 있는 어원적 의미와 성경적 의미 그리고 기독교 역사적 의미를 통해 직업은 단순히 재화를 벌어들이는 생업(job)이나 사업(business)이 아니라 하나님이 부르신 이차적소명(second vocation)으로서 이해해야하며 이 이차적 소명은 하나님이 그 직업을 통해 부르신 일차적 소명 (first vocation) 곧 하나님과의 관계 회복을 통해 그 의미가 회복된다는 내용이다. 그러나 프로테스탄트적 소명관이 가지고 있는 문제점 곧 직업을 이차적 소명이 아닌 일차적 소명으로 인식하고 있는 문제점도 지적하였다.
두 번째 장으로, 직업 상담은 사실 예방이 더 중요하기에 하나님이 이차적 소명으로 부르시는 직업을 분별하는 원리들에 대하여 서술하였다. 마지막으로, 기독 상담적 관점에서 직업의 의미와 실업(失業)이 가져오는 실업신경증 그리고 그 치유에 관하여 간략하게 살펴보았다. 참으로 직업은 하나님께서 이 땅에 하나님 나라를 임하게 하는 도구로 주신 소명이다. 하나님이 부르시는 소명적 직업을 지혜롭게 분별하고 또한 그 직업을 통해 기뻐하고 감사하며 사는 것이 살아계신 하나님께 영광을 돌리며 사는 삶일 것이다.
