This paper will focus on the objective or the necessity of construction of gazetteer, the source materials, and the structure of database. Later, I will also briefly mention the way of utilizing this database. The Constructing database of the placenames of Korea is to extract placenames in the text materials of Korea, and then to geo-reference the exact position on the topographic
maps. The source materials for contructing of database are old, modern and present maps and the geographical dictionaries and geographical books. The basic frame of this database is granting subject value, spatial value, and time value to each placename. The subject value is being set by classifying types of placenames and signifying mode. The spatial value is being set
by coding the past location and contemporary location as administrative district and digitized by geographical coordination. The time value is determined by the original published point of time of resource text. Giving time value to the place names is useful for managing their longitudinal records. Mode value of placename is determined by point, line and polygon and this is
required for regulating relationships among placenames. The placename type classification can be used for understanding locality or local culture. When local governments make new placename, this database can be useful resource for them. Moreover, by identifying culture diffusion way, economic military movement way, and the positions of transportation, commercial
and religious facilities, it can do a key role in reconstructing old times landscape, and can be a basic resource for institutional history.

이 글은 한국의 지명데이터베이스 구축과 그 발전 방향을 모색하는 데에 목적을 둔다. 주요 내용은 현재 국토지리정보원에서 확보하고 있는 지명데이터베이스의 구조를 분석하고, 이를 저본으로하여 향후 확장할 수 있는 범위와 방안을 제시함으로써 좀더 발전된지명DB의 구축방향을 모색하는 것으로 구성된다. 기존의 DB는 엑셀프로그램으로 구축되었기 때문에 구조를 확장하는 데에 별 지장이 없다. 이를 위해서는 우선 데이터베이스의 필드구조를 분석하고 구축 당시 동원된 자료원(資料源)을 확보할 필요가 있다. 확장 방안을 모색하는 과정에서는 지명유형에 대한 분석, 이명(異名)에 대한 분석, 지명의 시간값에 대한 분석, 지명의 공간값에 대한분석 등이 핵심을 이룬다. 지명데이터베이스 구축 못지 않게 중요한 것은 정부 차원에서 이를 지속적으로 관리하는 시스템을 운영하는 것이며, 아울러 구축된 지명 정보는 인터넷을 통해 효율적으로 서비스되어야 한다.
