One of contribution of the Reformer John Calvin was to reform the church by providing the marks of the church. His concern for recovering the true church was stated through the marks of the church. Calvin identified the true church and the false church by the marks of the church.
The marks of the church is stated as follows: Wherever we see the Word of God purely preached and heard, and the sacraments administered according to Christ’s institution, there, it is not to be doubt, a church of God exists.
This kind of Calvin’s understanding of preaching gives some significant insights to the contemporary homiletics and preaching. Firstly, the contemporary homiletic theory and the ministry of preaching are to be developed and practised for building up the church. In order for this, the homiletics has a relationship with the practical theological ecclesiology. Secondly, the contemporary preacher should consider the primary importance of preaching in the their other ministries for the upbuilding of the church. Also the expository preaching has to be reconsidered and emphasized for the reformation of the church. Thirdly, Calvin emphasized the role of the congregation in his preaching.
Contemporary preaching also should know the role of congregation. But there is no space for the congregation in the contemporary preaching ministry. Therefore, we need to develop a preaching system which involves the congregation in the process of the preaching.

종교개혁자 Calvin의 공헌 중의 하나는 참된 교회의 표지를 제시함으로서 교회를 개혁한 일이다. 참된 교회를 회복하고자 하는 그의 관심은 참된 교회의 표지로 진술되었다. Calvin은 교회의 표지를 통해서 참된 교회와 거짓 교회를 구별했다.
Calvin의 참된 교회의 표지는‘하나님의 말씀이 순수하게 전파되고 들려지며, 그리스도께서 제정하신 성례가 그대로 시행되는 곳이라면, 바로 거기에 하나님의 교회가 존재한다’는 것이다. 이러한 Calvin의 교회론과 교회의 표지의 중심을 이루고 있는 것은 설교이다.
이와 같은 교회의 표지 속에서 나타난 Calvin의 설교의 이해는 오늘날 교회의 설교사역에 중요한 통찰력을 제시하고 있다. 첫째, 오늘날의 설교학과 설교사역은 무엇보다도 교회를 세우는 일이 되어야 한다. 특별히 설교학이 실천신학적 교회학과 연관을 가져서 설교사역이 교회의 정체성과 사명을 회복하는 일에 그 본질을 회복해야 한다. 둘째, 오늘날 설교자가 진정으로 교회를 세우는 사역에 있어서 가장 중요한 사역이 설교사역임을 재인식하며 또한 설교 사역의 중요성뿐만 아니라 하나님의 말씀이 바르게 해석되어지고 선포되는 성경적 강해설교가 이루어져야 한다. 셋째, Calvin은 설교사역에서 회중의 중요성을 염두에 두었다. 오늘날 설교사역에서도 회중은 여전히 중요한 자리에 있는 존재들이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 회중의 설교에서 역할은 거의 전무한 실정이다. 따라서 회중이 교회의 설교사역에 참여할 수 있는 설교의 시스템을 고려해야 한다.
